WHAT CAN THERAPY HELP WITH?

ABUSE

Abuse comes in many forms, be it sexual, physical, financial, emotional or mental. Perhaps you experienced abuse as a child and are still feeling the effects of this abuse or neglect. Whether the abuse is current or a past experience, counselling can help you process the feelings and the impact these experiences have on you, allowing you to move forward with your life.

ANGER

When our anger is out of control, we can hurt others and ourselves, verbally, physically or in other ways. Do you find yourself feeling angry quite often? Perhaps you find yourself feeling irritable at small things and trying your best not to snap at people. Anger could be the tip of the iceberg of many other emotions. However anger presents itself for you, it is worth taking the time to process the underlying causes of distress and find tools to help you understand and manage your anger.

ANXIETY

The way anxiety affects people can vary from person to person. Symptoms can be a mixture of, but not limited to: racing heart, shortness of breath, feeling dizzy, nausea, heart palpitations, excessive sweating or the need to leave a social gathering immediately. You may find yourself feeling on edge, irritable, restless and wound-up. Some people find they have difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep. There are techniques to help manage the physical and psychological aspects of anxiety.

BEREAVEMENT & LOSS

Grieving is a normal but complicated part of the process of reacting to a loss. You may experience grief as a mental, physical, social or emotional reaction. Many reactions can include anger, guilt, anxiety, sadness and despair. You might even feel completely numb, which may be a surprising and confusing feeling in relation to loss. The stage or feeling you’re in may change with the wind, or perhaps you feel stuck in a particular stage of grief. Counselling can help people cope with the physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and cognitive reactions to loss.

DEPRESSION

There are a number of symptoms of depression, including feeling unhappy or hopeless, having low self-esteem, and not enjoying things you normally enjoy.

In depression, you experience a low mood that lasts for weeks or months and disrupts your daily activities.

Therapy can help you explore the root cause of depression and find new coping stratagies

OVERWHELM

Overwhelm can cause a sudden strong emotion. Feeling overwhelmed can mean being completely immersed in an intense emotion and feeling that things are too difficult to overcome. Being in a state of overwhelm can make it difficult to think or act in a rational manner. Like anxiety, your sympathetic nervous system has activated fight or flight mode and it may feel unbearably hard to calm down.

PEOPLE PLEASING & BOUNDARIES

People pleasing can often mean denying yourself your own needs in order to please others. Lack of boundaries can lead you to drift away from your own values, needs and ambitions. By looking at the underlying emotions or fears associated with interpersonal relationships, we can then recognise why we are prone to people pleasing behaviours. When there is a tendency to need to please others, there can often be worry around how we are perceived or in some cases, a deep fear of abandonment.

TRAUMA & POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER

Traumatic events could be combat, assault, sexual abuse, physical or emotional abuse, accidents, disasters and loss. This can leave us with a range of psychological, emotional and physical reactions such as panic attacks, flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, overwhelm, avoidance, emotional numbness and hypervigilance, to name a few. There is no right or wrong way to react to traumatic events; we may all have different responses and different capacities for what we can manage.
